Street Artist Uncutt Art celebrates the 2nd annual PYH day in New York City on 4/23 with an art exhibition and “Protect Yo” Heart” documentary
Everyone in New York knows Protect Yo Heart. I see it in Miami, DC too. You shot another part to the documentary? You shot a part of it in LA?
I went to LA just to shoot an LA version. We did it real quick. Gave them some new love. It was so dope. Ran back to NY for the PYH event.
When did you come up with PYH?
It was not a when it was an era. I was living that PYH heart life. I’d created the upside down heart in 09. Boom with the thorns. I didn’t have a word or name for it.
When I first decided to do my art, I studied the greats. Every artist had their own tag line or signature they created and I wanted to create my own tagline that people recognize, that they loved but didn’t know where it came from. One day I looked at that heart, and thought about how the thorns protect it. I wanted it to be different and to sound like it’s a person and not a thing so I put “Yo”. So then I was like, that’s it. “Protect Yo Heart”. That’s me and that’s going to be it. So I sat on it for a year and thought about a campaign and how could I put it out. At the time I was working on the Michael Jackson’s on wheat-paste. But it wouldn’t look right on wheat-paste. So I did a stencil for it. At first I did it on the wall. Then I put that same stencil on the ground. From that day on, I never stopped.
Do you think it’s a difference between putting it on the ground vs. on the wall? I think energetically it’s a big difference. What about you?
It allows people to stumble on it. You can’t have time to break it down. By the time you get to it your brain is already trying to process it. But when you stumble on it, it touches your heart first. When you go straight to the heart and hit people hard. Just like the Michael’s were always hidden. Makes it more like a treasure. Like a gift for just being you. I was wandering and being myself and I found some dope shit.”
