Whether they are brand new to the art industry, or veteran artists with years of creating, exhibiting, and selling their artwork, there are 5 factors that an artist could pay attention to and see a change in their business.
Most artists have trouble pricing their work. They usually either overcharge or undercharge for their pieces and have trouble explaining why they priced it a certain amount.
They don’t show their work. Most artists don’t show their work nearly enough. They also don’t look for opportunities in non-traditional spaces like boutiques or cafes.
They don’t know the “right” people. The “right” people are people who know how to help you connect with buyers. Fellow artists and other creatives that sell in retail spaces and online can help you, not just buyers. Make genuine contacts, support other people, grow your audience, grow your business.
Most artists don’t have enough time. Running a business takes a lot of time, especially when you wear the hat of both the artist or talent AND the business person (plus family and friend and other obligations). Following up on opportunities, managing a social media campaign, writing proposals, researching places to exhibit are very time consuming activities.
Most artists don’t have business experience. They can be overwhelmed by all the business and legal skills needed to create their own brand identity graphics and materials, grow their market, negotiate with galleries and collectors, and brands, set up art shows, and collect and follow up with contacts.
Kiki Somerville is CEO + Founder of Fearless Artist Media/ TFAPOPUP/The Fearless Artist
Fearless Artist Media was founded by the belief that all artists need their own team of business, legal, tech, and marketing support. After years of media and entertainment industry experience, I saw that even artists that had a gallery affiliation, a record deal, a publishing contract, didn’t have the representation and support they needed to optimize their platform, generate more exposure and leads to sales.
I go into these 5 reasons in more detail in my free e-book “5 Reasons Artists don’t make enough money.” Visit fearlessartistmedia.com to download your complimentary copy.
